Don't worry. By the end of this guide, you'll have your own AI assistant running and responding to your messages. No terminal commands, no Docker errors, just a working OpenClaw instance in about 5 minutes.

By following this guide, you'll:

Prerequisites:
A ClawNest account (sign up at clawnest.co if you haven't)

A modern web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge)
No technical knowledge required. If you can use Google Drive, you can do this.
Understanding the Setup (In Plain English)
Before we dive in, here's what's happening behind the scenes:
ClawNest = The hosting service that runs OpenClaw for you in the cloud
OpenClaw = The AI assistant software that does the actual work
Gateway = The control panel where you configure your assistant
Think of it like this:
ClawNest is the apartment building (hosting infrastructure)
OpenClaw is your apartment (your personal AI assistant)
Gateway is your apartment's control panel (where you adjust settings)
When you create an assistant on ClawNest, we provision a secure cloud server for you. You then connect to it via the gateway (a web interface) to configure your AI's personality and capabilities.
Why the two-step process? Security. OpenClaw requires device pairing to ensure only YOU can access your assistant, not random people on the internet.
Step 1: Create Your Assistant on ClawNest
1.1 Go to the ClawNest Dashboard
Visit app.clawnest.co
Log in with your credentials
You'll see your dashboard (it's probably empty if this is your first time)
1.2 Click "Create Assistant"
Look for the big button that says "Create New Assistant" or "+ New Assistant"
1.3 Configure Your Assistant
You'll be asked for a few details:
Assistant Name:
Choose something memorable (e.g., "My Work Assistant", "Personal AI", "Jarvis")
This is just for you to identify it if you create multiple assistants later
Server Region:
Europe (EU): Best for European users, GDPR-compliant
United States (US): Fastest for North American users
Asia (Singapore): Optimized for Asia-Pacific region
Choose the region closest to you for best performance. Your data will stay in that region.

1.4 Subscribe and Confirm
Enter your payment details (you won't be charged during the 7-day trial)
Click "Create Assistant"

Step 2: Get Your Gateway Credentials
Once initialization completes, two important pieces of information have been added to your Assistant's dashboard:
1. Gateway URL
Looks like:

2. Gateway Token

Security Note: Your gateway token is like a password. Never share it publicly. ClawNest staff will never ask for it.
Step 3: Connect to Your OpenClaw Gateway
Now that your OpenClaw instance is running, you need to connect to it.
3.1 Open Your Gateway URL
Click the Gateway URL (or paste it into your browser)
You'll see the OpenClaw Control UI login page
It might say "Authentication Required" or "Connect to Gateway"
3.2 Navigate to Overview Tab
Look for the "Overview" tab in the left sidebar
Click it
You'll see a connection configuration screen
3.3 Enter Your Credentials
You'll see two input fields:
WebSocket URL:
Paste your Gateway URL here

Gateway Token:
Paste your Gateway Token here

3.4 Click "Connect"
Hit the "Connect" button
You'll see a loading spinner for a few seconds
When successful, you'll see: "Connected to gateway" โ
What just happened? Your browser (the "device") just authenticated with your OpenClaw instance. This is like logging into your Gmail for the first time.
Step 4: Approve Your Device (Important!)
This is the step most users miss. OpenClaw requires device pairing for security. Think of it like two-factor authentication for your AI assistant.
4.1 Return to ClawNest Dashboard
Go back to app.clawnest.co
Click on your assistant's name in the dashboard
You'll see several tabs: Overview, Security, Pairing, Billing
4.2 Go to the Pairing Tab
Click the "Pairing" tab
You'll see a list of devices trying to connect
You should see a "Pending Device" entry that looks like:
Device Type:
BrowserIP Address: Your current IP
Status:
Pending Approval
4.3 Approve the Device
Click the "Approve" button next to the pending device
You'll see the status change to: "Approved" โ
Why is this necessary? OpenClaw was designed for self-hosting, where anyone on your network might try to connect. Device pairing ensures only YOUR browser, YOUR phone, YOUR Telegram account can talk to your assistant.
For every new device you use (different browser, phone, tablet), you'll repeat this pairing process.
4.4 Verify Connection
Go back to your OpenClaw Gateway tab (the browser tab with your gateway URL)
Refresh the page if needed
You should now see the full Control UI dashboard with no errors

Step 5: Configure Your AI's Personality
Time: 2-3 minutes
This is the fun part. You're about to "wake up" your AI and give it a personality.
5.1 Go to the Chat Tab
In the OpenClaw Control UI, find the "Chat" tab in the left sidebar

You'll see an empty chat interface (like WhatsApp or Telegram)
5.2 Send the Setup Message
In the chat input box, type exactly this:

5.3 Answer the AI's Questions

Issue 3: "No pending devices in Pairing tab"
Cause: The browser connection request didn't reach the gateway, or it expired.

Go back to the OpenClaw Gateway tab
Click "Connect" again
Wait 10 seconds
Refresh the ClawNest Pairing tab
The pending device should appear
Note: Pairing requests expire after 5 minutes for security. If you waited too long, just reconnect.
Issue 4: "Assistant not responding to setup message"
Cause: AI credits might not be configured properly, or there's a temporary API issue.
Solution:
Wait 30 seconds and try again
Check the ClawNest dashboard for any error messages
Verify your subscription is active (not expired trial)
Try a simpler message: "Hello"
If the assistant still doesn't respond, contact support. This usually indicates an OpenRouter API issue (rare).
Issue 5: "Disconnected from gateway" after initial connection
Cause: The device approval was revoked, or you're using a different browser/device.
Solution:
Check if you switched browsers or went into incognito mode
Each browser/device needs separate approval
Return to ClawNest Pairing tab
Approve the new device
Reconnect
Remember: You need to approve each device you use to access your assistant.
Security Best Practices
Your OpenClaw assistant has access to potentially sensitive information (emails, calendar, files). Keep it secure:
